Danny Massure - What It Aint The Remixes (2009) Artist: Danny Massure Title Of Album: What It Aint The Remixes Year Of Release: 09-2008 Label: Spring Strut Genre: Funk/Breaks/Acid Jazz Quality: mp3 Bitrate: 192 kbps / 44.1kHz / Joint-Stereo Total Size: 65.2 mb WebSite: Danny Massure Tracklist: 01. Rock The Afro (Kinski's Daktari Child Remix) 05. Sweet Miss Rae (Tal M. Klein Remix) 06.
Mama Didn't Lie (Quasamodo Remix) 07. Rewind (Quincy Jointz Remix) 08. Soledad (Ben Dean Remix) 09. Hotchacha (Valique Remix) His blend of rare groove, funk and dance cannot be faulted. He has some killer tunes in his bag and the good news is that the all-star team of remixers have given their all. The South City Allstars version of 'Corkscrew', which opens the album just rocks.
Everyone should own it. It's as simple as that. It's a quality tune and the Allstars have really done the original track justice and cranked everything up. One of the real highlights from Danny's debut CD was 'Mama Didn't Lie' and 'What It Ain't' has not one, but two versions of that kicking track.
I personally preferred the Rephrase remix, but I'm sure some of you will prefer the other by Quasamodo. All the remixes accentuate the acid jazz and deep funk grooves by building on them, definitely making 'What It Ain't' one of the must listen releases of the year. If you don't believe me, check out the Valique remix of 'Hotchacha' - which as we say in England, is the mutt's nuts. You could play this tune a million times and never grow tired of it. Normally, remix albums tend to ruin the original material, but 'What It Ain't' has taken some truly great source material and sprinkled some serious magic over it. Evolved (6:53) A saxophone legend, Berklee alum, and all-around funk genius, Sam Kininger is building his fan-base and repertoire simultaneously at clubs across the country. Kininger has been in legendary funk/soul groups since the beginning, including, but not limited to Lettuce, Soulive and the Brotherhood of Groove. He has also performed with larger pop acts including Dave Matthews and Wyclef Jean. As a solo artist Sam Kininger has developed a distinctive, organic sound on the saxophone that is strongly expressive. He consistently demonstrates his technical dexterity and rhythmic precision while maintaining an honest and innovative exploration of musical improvisation.
Album includes completely original instrumental funk/jazz compositions. The grooves are intense and the solos are aggressively rhythmic and deeply soulful. Loaded with guest musicians, Sam Kininger's album features some of the most talented musicians on the scene, including Eric Krasno (guitar) and Neal Evans (organ) from Soulive, the legendary Fred Wesley (trombone) from George Clinton's Parliament and James Brown's JB's, and Adam Deitch (drums), a member of guitar legend John Scofield's band. Paul Rozmus, bandleader, composer, arranger, producer, keyboardist and solo flutist is an extraordinarily rewarding listen.
His nimble instrumental scatting, percussive sensitivity, infectious grooves, sensual energy and intelligent arrangements imbue both his recordings and dynamic live performance with irresistible warmth and charm. Deliciously rhythmic, melodic and hooky, On The Funky Side encompasses contemporary jazz and r&b, shaded by funk, blues, Latin and pop. “Each of the songs has some kind of different twist, even though they’re related to each other,” reflects Rozmus. “That’s why I picked different musicians for different songs. I wanted variety, yet there had to be a stylistic connection.” Rozmus has assembled a collection of contemporary jazz and r&b’s most exceptional artists to evoke that delicate balance. Jeff Kashiwa lends soprano saxophone to the album’s first single, “No, No, No OK!” providing a perfect vehicle for Rozmus’ agile fluting. Freddy Jackson, who has a penchant for collecting No.
1 Hits, delivers a romantic and sensuous version of Rozmus & Gary Walker’s’ “I Miss You,” while guitarist Eric Essix infuses the title track with his signature funk-blues-jazz fusion. (The track has already been picked up on smooth jazz stations in the UK, where London-based Passion Jazz has released On The Funky Side.) Essix also plays and shares production credit on the evocative and sexy “At 2 In The Morning.” With On The Funky Side, Rozmus has delivered a groundbreaking and break-through project that is literally a breath of fresh air in the sax-saturated world of smooth jazz. Presently, he is touring and performing non-stop with his own Paul Rozmus Band, and is scheduling selected dates with Jeff Kashiwa, Freddie Jackson and Eric Essix in support of his current release. Rozmus is planning to produce a number of instrumental and vocal performers this year, but above all wishes to live out his responsibility as an artist: “to create positive images.” “After all,” he pronounces with deep conviction, “We are creating our future!”. Alison's Pony (8:58) Reviews: Yet it's the heavy, heartfelt delivery of Headhunter's style funk and later, jaw dropping Return To Forever-style prog, that highlights this unit as a real cut above the trippy nonsense that often passes for 'jam band' fair. Those in need of a hit of real rhythm section magic with a dollop psychotropic rhythmic/harmonic invention on top, should track this album down with some urgency. Jazzwise With jazz fusion having been around for some forty years now, it's not so easy to be distinctive in that field anymore. Garaj Mahal manages to stick out, mainly due to massive chops by all four group members and a dizzying array of influences each group member brings to the table. Norah 6 Whether Medeski Martin and Wood named The Dropper in the hip-hop and dance traditions of 'dropping science' and 'dropping the beat' or to name-drop a delivery mechanism for liquid lysergic acid diethylamide, the album is jazz's best bridge to all three in a long time. This is the perfect electric corollary to early 2000's acoustic blowout, Tonic, with MMW at full tilt from the album-opening growl that announces 'We Are Rolling' (a double entendre, perchance?).
Medeski jumps on his keys with such force that it's several tunes into The Dropper before you realize you've come through hazes and blazes of beats and billows to hear a pristine midrange piano. The more overtly beat-oriented sound of 1998's Combustication appears periodically here, but so too do wild alto sax windstorms-care of guest and Sun Ra band veteran Marshall Allen and guitar thunder from guest Marc Ribot (among other esteemed visitors). But the real push and pull of The Dropper come with on-the-one beats punching through thick storms of sound and leading the trio into sweet, soulful spots like the bossa-painted 'Note Bleu.' Colossal shape shifting is the order of the day.Andrew Bartlett Feel good jazz-funk titans Medeski, Martin & Wood continue to push at the contours of their wide-ranging hybrid of hip-hop, electronica, experimental jazz, and deep groove on their 2000 release, THE DROPPER.
While less consistently funky than COMBUSTICATION, THE DROPPER still serves up plenty of head-nodding rhythms and tasty, mind-expanding textures. Guitarist Marc Ribot and former Sun Ra Arkestra saxophonist Marshall Allen make cameo appearances, adding spice to MMW's sonic stew. Bossa nova jams ('Note Bleu') and rhumba-flavored pulses ('Partido Alto') provide additional twists and turns to the ever-satisfying, earthy, heady, lockstep chemistry of this excellent trio. Recorded at Shacklyn, Brooklyn, New York in 1999 & 2000. Medeski Martin & Wood: John Medeski (keyboards); Chris Wood (acoustic & electric basses); Billy Martin (drums, bass drum, talking drum, repique, wood block, agogo bells, gong, mbira, berimbau, cuica, lenga, reco-reco). Take Me Home 11. The Alley Product Description Any artist who takes his or her craft seriously will inevitably reach a point on the journey when history can no longer be overlooked. The direct line between the music of now and the music of then becomes too important to ignore, and the riches of generations past are suddenly rediscovered - and eventually reinterpreted for a new era.
Saxophonist Mindi Abair has reached that critical juncture. After more than a decade of performing, songwriting and recording, she has taken a step back from the more polished sensibilities of contemporary jazz and embraced the sounds of past decades - specifically the `60s and early `70s, a period widely regarded as the golden age of R&B, soul and funk.
The result is In Hi-Fi Stereo. The album captures the raw and edgy aesthetic of that golden age, when a slab of vinyl could instantaneously put band and listener together in the same room and establish a visceral and enduring connection. Loaded with infectious grooves generated by a high-caliber crew of players, In Hi-Fi Stereo rekindles that spark for a new generation of ears. Co-produced by Abair and R&B mainstay Rex Rideout (who also lays down keyboards on nearly every track), In Hi-Fi Stereo includes a roster of players representing the old school as well as the new.
In addition to Abair's touring band, the album is seasoned with a number of guest players: veteran drummer James Gadson (a frequent session player for Bill Withers, Amos Lee and Nikka Costa), bassist Reggie McBride (Aretha, Rickie Lee Jones and Keb' Mo'), Mindi's Berklee classmate and friend Lalah Hathaway, nominated 2010 R&B Female Vocalist of the year, Ryan Collins and David Ryan Harris. Start to finish, In Hi-Fi Stereo is something classic and something new at the same time. 'It's a vintage sounding record, a modern take on a very classic sound,' she says.
'We didn't make your father's jazz record. We didn't set out to make an `old' record. It's not about doing what's been done before. It's about drawing on what and who inspires you, and bringing it into your world and making it your own - and then putting it out there for a new generation of people who love jazz and soul.' Hold the Bus (5:13) the UK's premier funk band started out as a quartet gigging in small clubs in the Southeast of England in 1999, playing classic funk tunes by artists such as The Meters and The JB's. As the gigs got bigger, so did the band and they were soon complemented with the now renowned Speedo Horns and the all-girl soul vocalists The Speedettes. In 2000, the first single 'Soul Safari' was released on the seminal New York based label Soul Fire and was soon followed with a slew of fine releases on other labels such as Timmion and Kennel Klub. Each single was released on 7' only and limited to 500 copies.
The emerging modern funk boom of the mid 90s, aided by magazines such as Big Daddy and DJs Keb Darge, Snowboy and Jazzman Gerald, lapped up the authentic sounds and tight arrangements. These early singles sold out immediately and not surprisingly now fetch a handsome price on various on-line auction sites.
It is these early groundbreaking singles that this compilation is dedicated. None of the 12 tracks have been released on CD before, with 3 of the tracks being previously unreleased. From the firing opener of “Speedometer Parts 1 & 2” through to the heavy funk workout of “Hold The Bus” it is easy to see this bands influence on the style of artists such as The Quantic Soul Orchestra, Breakestra and any other band in the modern funk scene.Over the years, Speedometer have worked with many of the US funk legends includingJoe Quarterman, Eddie Bo, Marva Whitney, Sharon Jones, James Bell (Highlighters), Lee Fields, and Billy Wooten. All the artists were blown away by Speedometer's authenticity and dedication to faithfully creating the original soul-funk sound. We hope you are too! This wonderful side first recorded and released in 1966 really grows on you. It's really a companion piece to 1965's Extensions - part of Jamal's attempt to stay true to his 'sound' and instincts of melody, harmony and 'space' above else while also subtly integrating then contemporary influences from the 'new thing'/free jazz currents then wrecking havoc in the jazz world in 1966. Previously archived by Smooth at his landmark My Jazz World blog (now here), I decided to make this side available here as well for the time being. This posting also concludes this blog's ongoing series on Ahmad Jamal, documenting his unfairly forgotten and all OOP work on Chess-Argo-Cadet from 1962-68, in anticipation of the forthcoming July 2010 landmark 9CD Mosaic box set covering Jamal's legendary and seminal first trio with Israel Crosby and Vernel Fournier from 1956-1961. That period of Jamal's discography is beautiful and timeless - but I am more interested on this blog asking where does the artist go after they have achieved perfection?
Do they keep on doing the same thing or they do they attempt something totally different? This is the driving dilemma from which to approach Jamal's work from 1962-68 on Chess. Yet Jamal's artistic transition during this time also happened to coincide with a pretty hellish period in his personal life which hasn't been documented. After the immense commercial and artistic success of 1958's Pershing side, and the extensive touring of the trio from 1958-60 - Jamal's initial instinct was to do something totally different - but in a business-entrepreneurial vein by both opening his own import-export business while also poring most of his financial resources into opening his own supper club, 'The Alhambra' on Chicago's South side which officially opened on December 2, 1960. The swank and trendy club, decorated in a North African/Morocco motif sat 125 patrons, only served non-alcoholic drinks (in keeping with Jamal's Muslim beliefs) and offered a myriad of Indian, Middle Eastern & American dishes - was estimated to have cost Jamal personally 250,000$. Ebony Magazine's October 1961 issue has a wonderful feature on the 'Alhambra' detailing the elegance of the supper club's design and of the unique dining experience of gourmet cuisine with elegant entertainment provided by the Ahmad Jamal Trio! Yet this moment of triumph for Jamal was short lived as it was suddenly announced a month later in December 1961 that Jamal was closing the supper club and moving away from Chicago to the East Coast.
The shocking news came out later in March 1962 that Jamal was divorcing his wife, Maryam (formerly Virginia Wilkins) and disbanding his trio immediately. The divorce was far from amicable as the contemporary African-American press gleefully reported the private pain of a prominent African American 'celebrity'. The dealbreaker for the marriage apparently was 'The Alhambra', originally mostly Mrs' Jamal's conception and its financial difficulties related to Jamal's refusal to sell alcohol in accordance with his principles.
More darkness was to come for Jamal - hospitalized in June 1963 for an apparent overdose of sleeping pills related to the stress from his contentious divorce, later arrested in February 1966 during a Chicago engagement at this instigation of the former Mrs. Jamal for alleged non-payment of child support, later cleared- the divorce case was not finally resolved until August 1968 with Mrs. Jamal winning her appeal for even more support.
With all this private pain and legal hell that Jamal was undergoing during this time, it's amazing that Jamal was even productive and recording regularly from Macanudo, a orchestral latin jazz tinged collaboration with Richard Evans, to the edgy live date of Naked City Theme, the innovative Broadway themed The Roar of the Greasepaint, the two modern jazz sets of Extensions and this side, 'Heatwave', and the more commercially orientated Jazz with Strings date 'Rhapsody' and both of the Jazz Vocals dates - 'Cry Young' and 'The Bright The Blue The Beautiful'. Quite remarkable really - I wouldn't call all of these sides unqualified successes - but from we know of Jamal's personal challenges - this discography does paint a picture of a resilient artist - and of a musical innovator not willing to easily rest on his laurels.
